Bent & Broken Shafts of Light by Lawrence Weiner

Hatje Cantz

A collection of works by American artist Lawrence Weiner.

Weiner had been sending his works as invitations, had his works published in newspapers, and produced a large number of matchbox-shaped works.1970 In the 1990s, he began to carve his works directly onto the walls of exhibition halls. In 2000, Weiner conceived a work about the immateriality of color and light, inspired by the colors of the Northern Lights, and painted stripes of these colors on the 40 x 16.5 meter wall of the Wolfsburg Museum. The white text on the wall creates the effect of an opening, and the wall itself appears almost transparent. Inspired by the northern lights, Weiner's work not only reflects natural phenomena, but also intricately interweaves different levels of perception.
