Womens Work

Womens Work was launched in the mid-1970s as a magazine that showcased the overlooked work of women artists on the cutting edge of visual arts, music and performance. The magazine was edited by artists Alison Knowles and Annea Lockwood and featured scores of text-based performances by a total of 25 artists, composers and choreographers.

Knowles, who designed the magazine, deliberately chose off-white paper and brown ink, as opposed to the dry, white paper that was popular at the time. The works presented are wide ranging, take many forms, use both typewritten and handwritten text, and are often accompanied by visual elements such as charts, drawings, and photographs. They also argue that these works are meant to be performed, and that this book is not just a sluggish book to be appreciated like a work of art.
