Preston Bus Station by Jamie Hawkesworth
A collection of works by British photographer Jamie Hawkesworth.
This book contains photographs taken by Hawksworth at Preston Bus Station, a bus terminal in London.
Preston Bus Station is a Brutalist-style bus terminal with historical value, built in 1969 by Arup, an international engineering company headquartered in London. When Hawksworth was a student, he and his photography teacher worked on a project to take portraits of teenagers at the Preston Bus Station on weekends and compile them into a newspaper-style publication. However, a few years later, the artist starts a new project when he hears that the building will be demolished.
“I thought I would go back to Preston and shoot every day for a month at the Preston Bus Station. Every day, I walked around there all day.I decided not to think about anything more than that, and I took a picture of whoever it was.I could use the Megabus at that place, so I went to Preston from the north. When I found someone who looked good, I asked them to take a portrait, but I asked them to do it as naturally as possible. I took pictures of old people, people with weird hairstyles, kids with funny shoes, and all kinds of people.” — Jamie Hawkesworth
