Man and Woman (Reprint Edition) by Eikoh Hosoe

ナディッフ

Complete reprint edition of "Otoko to Onna (MAN and WOMAN)," a photobook by Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe.

Tatsumi Hijikata's stage performance at Dai-ichi Seimei Hall in Hibiya in 1959 served as the inspiration for Eikoh Hosoe to create the series "Otoko to Onna," which featured Hijikata, his students, fellow dancers, and fashion model Masako Ishida as his subjects. This book is a complete reprint of Hosoe's first book, published the year after his 1960 solo exhibition of the same title. Unlike nude photographs that emphasized the sexuality of the body, which had been the mainstream in Japan until then, this work attempted to explore and express more abstract emotions, the roots of humanity, and sexuality itself through the nude body. It is considered one of the most important works in the history of Japanese nude photography.

Text by Ed van der Elsken and Tatsuo Fukushima. Obi text by Seicho Matsumoto. Signed by Eiko Hosoe.

"In the tumultuous atmosphere of the Security Treaty struggle, the photographer and the models connected, giving birth to a form of photographic expression that had never existed in the world before. It became not only a prototype for Hosoe but also one of the prototypes of photographic expression. This is the long-awaited reprint of the original edition." (From the publisher's note)
