Primary Information

A collection of works by American artist David Wojnarowicz.

In the Shadow of Forward Motion was published as a limited edition zine/catalog to accompany Wojnarowicz's exhibition at P.P.O.W. Gallery in 1989.

Even though only 50 copies were produced, the publication has been treated as a legendary artist's book, and with good reason. This book offers a glimpse of the germination of Wojnarowicz's now iconic mixed media work. With motifs of ants, locomotives, gold, tornadoes, and dinosaurs, it is juxtaposed with newspaper articles and other texts that examine the mechanisms of historical and global power symbolized by the technology of the times, each on an equal footing. are doing. Wojnarowicz, using fragmentary experiences from his daily life (including his carefully documented dreams), argues that these techniques can be applied to class, cultural, and racial oppression. Revealed to be a weapon.

Since being diagnosed with AIDS in the late 80's, Wojnarowicz's experience of living with HIV has always been the subject of his work. It was also to expose the political and social structures that perpetuate discrimination against women and people of color who face additional barriers in their efforts to seek treatment for their illnesses. Rooted in the artistic, political, religious, and civil rights turmoil of the 1980s, this book offers a stunningly clear glimpse into an American culture that has yet to become a thing of the past.

Preface by philosopher Felix Guattari (Pierre-Félix Guattari).
