STANLEY/BARKER

A collection of works by American photographer Tod Papageorge.

Papa George began photographing him in 1962, studying English Literature at the University of New Hampshire. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1970 and taught at Yale University's Department of Photography from 1979 to 2013. Among his students at the time were important photographers in the history of American photography, such as Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Susan Lipper, and Gregory Crewdson. There is no doubt that he possessed a unique talent not only as a photographer but also as a teacher. This book contains a series of photographs taken during the summers of 1983 and 1984 on the Greek Acropolis.

"I stayed at a wonderful hotel called Zafolia, which is a 5-minute walk from the Acropolis. Marble is used everywhere in the room, and every evening I swim in the pool many times, which is a big nuisance to the hotel staff. I usually ate lunch at a vegetarian restaurant in Plaka, at the foot of the Parthenon hill, and I liked the taste there.I don't quite remember where we went for dinner. No. During my stay I was totally isolated from the surroundings: I would shoot on the Acropolis in the morning, go to lunch, then some more shots, go back to the hotel, swim and have dinner somewhere nearby. This was my whole day." - Tod Papageorge
