Desert Cities by Aglaia Konrad

JRP|Ringier

A collection of works published in 2008 by the Swiss publisher JRP|Ringier.

Conrad visited Egypt in 1992. While traveling by taxi from Cairo to the second city of Alexandria, he saw a large number of housing complexes under construction. Conrad was interested in the scene and after his return, searched for literature in East German libraries, but found only one book. In the mid-1990s, materials about emerging architecture in China and the UAE were finally coming out, but there was no information about the scene he saw at that time, so Conrad decided to conduct his own research.

In 2004, Conrad submitted a film* shot in Egypt at the time to the Swiss subsidy program "Le Grand Prix international de photographie de Vevey", and passed the screening. . Conrad finally made a return visit to Egypt, capturing the application of 'modernist' principles in architecture in desert cities such as Cairo, Alexandria and Anwar Sadat. He sees a dialogue between seemingly contradictory elements such as imported models and local elements, buildings and ruins, deserts and communities, modernity and tradition.
