Angle 23 by Miki Kratsman & Shabtai Pinchevsky

Multipress

The 23rd issue of Angle, an occasional zine series published by independent Norwegian publisher Multipress. Issues 21 to 24 were curated by the artist, with guest Dutch independent curator Hester Keijser.

This issue features "Khan al-Ahmar" by Miki Kratsman and Shabtai Pinchevsky.

In this project, called Anti Mapping, Kratzmann and Pinchevsky attempt to independently research and document the geography of the Palestinian region as an alternative to the official map photographs produced by the Israeli government. . Images published by the government are subject to restrictions on expression due to military considerations, and aerial photographs in particular must always use low-resolution photographs (compared to international standards). This obscure map implies that small settlements are easy to relocate or dismantle, and therefore fraught with power exercise problems.

Klatzmann and Pintsevski shot higher resolution and more accurate images, partly using drone photography, to capture more reality. The area they map, Khan al-Amar, consists of 12 Palestinian settlements with a total population of 1,400. People living there have low incomes, little access to welfare and education, and basic infrastructure throughout the region. Both are trying to make these endangered places visible on maps and in real life.
