Loops by Anders Edström

A collection of works by Swedish photographer and filmmaker Anders Edström.

This book uses the front and back covers to develop a story in chronological order. Taking photos while walking, driving, or traveling, always looking around and taking notice of something, stopping where the lighting and the scene are connected. Rather than glorious sights and eccentric things, he seeks the moment when the sight in front of him and the light become one, as if guided by a mysterious force. As such, his images may seem mundane, but each one represents a connection between light, time and energy. In this book, puddles of light-reflecting pigments appear between these images. The puddles that I made at home in order to make use of the reflection of light in my work are, to borrow the words of an essay written by art historian E.H. It is a study of "shape and texture". Edström first made his mark in the fashion world, where he found himself rebelling against the fashion world's preconceived notions by simply painting over ordinary things like boots, jeans and backpacks with white paint. It was Martin Margiela who turned Edström, like Margiela, eschews the extraordinary, the striking, and the stereotypical, leaning towards raw naturalism, while embracing alternatives through his synesthesia-driven photography. It expresses the way we see the world.
