Mathematics by Peter Fraser

Skinnerboox

A collection of works by British photographer Peter Fraser.

“Most of the photos in this project show a lot of detail. It was part of its ingenuity: when you open the shutter, the camera catches the light bouncing off whatever is in front of it, even a blank white wall. It could be a million pebbles, the photographer might have thought about the details before taking the picture, or he might have barely even seen them. We cannot look at a photograph with the same indifference or mathematical rationality that a camera records its subject. It is the intuitive feeling that while it is made to be seen, it is not ours after all, it is that of the camera from which it was created.

This is an unusual series of photos. Peter Fraser has photographed them in many countries, and the motifs photographed are more diverse than ever before. As the photographer himself understands, only the subject of mathematics could bring these photographs together. What are those mysterious portraits that occasionally punctuate the book? Just before he photographed five or six of these people, Fraser asked them to imagine that what they thought to be true for most of their lives had just been proven wrong. is clarified. What were these people thinking, what axioms each imaginatively and temporally had. We have no reason to know. Fraser didn't know either. But still, in a brief state of self-critical thinking, when the contemplation itself was contemplating, he filmed it. These portraits not only support the project, but also provide some of the most reflective moments. There is a deep affection between the state of mind depicted here and what Fraser may be inviting from us, a flawed and inconsistent audience. —David Company
