Artist book by British photographer Véronique Laurent.
Memories of an Unknown Island is a project about places that do not exist, imaginary utopias born from photographs taken in the vast number of places Laurent has visited. By confronting and re-editing the photographs of many places he has visited so far, Laurent has visually and emotionally fused the originally unconnected places and transformed them into a fictional land like utopia. There, the boundaries between reality and the constructed world are abstracted, creating non-existent islands made up of past memories and momentary events, and fantasies based on facts spread. Each image is a visual representation of an existing environment, but this newly created world holds endless possibilities for stories and dreams. The project is an immersion in the natural world in search of impossible places that exist only in Laurent's imagination, and the viewer, as Laurent did, asks where or what the image depicts. Whether there is, it will be exposed to curiosity and confusion. One image may be familiar, but when it flows into the next image, the sense of reality is lost, and the surprise of this unknown island is wrapped in it.
