Onder Vrouwen
This photo book was published to commemorate the first anniversary of Virginia, a feminist publishing house founded by Carla Brunost, an activist who has been involved in the Dutch feminist movement since the 1970s.
An editorial committee was formed consisting of women both inside and outside the printing company, and the book includes photographs submitted through public submissions, both professional and amateur.
"Friendship between women is not just friendship. They are colleagues, rivals, playmates, enemies, romantic partners, family members, sometimes unintentionally allies, sometimes intentionally allies. The editors decided to call this photo book "Between Women" to give new impetus to the search for photos to include. ─ Women living in this age of feminism and liberation have less and less choice to document what they are already doing and what they can do for each other. That is why there are few photos of movements in this book. But such photos usually tell us more about the actions and demonstrations than about the women who participated with them. For the same reason, there are many photos of famous women standing in historical moments. In short, this book is not so much a record of the social life of women in the 1980s as it is an attempt to reflect the emotional world of women themselves in all kinds of situations.
