Self-published photo book by Vienna-based French photographer Elodie Grethen.
“Tokyo Stories is a two-part project that explores the possibilities of intimacy and new encounters in Japan. Confronted with a system of rules and social norms: in a society where all interactions are defined by etiquette, is there room for intimacy, and if so, in what form? And the city of Tokyo is one of them. What role does it play in
?The origin of this project was therefore sociological, and it was necessary to conduct careful research. Through social media, dating apps, and her personal recommendations, Gretten was able to meet Japanese and foreigners living in Japan. Filming took place at their home, in their neighborhood, sometimes in a secluded love hotel. These familiar surroundings allowed her to capture her secret and personal moments, and at the same time create her own unique map of Tokyo. Why did these previously unfamiliar people consent to this meeting? How was the relationship between photographer and subject created? By entering their home, and thus their world, Greten was able to break the distance and create a short but strong connection with them – a connection that became part of the project itself. Having earned their trust and witnessed their intimacy, she then began collecting stories. A story about love, family, sex and the city. This is the story of Tokyo.
This series is an ode to self-discovery. It is a journey through cities of such cultures and peoples, captured in their most personal moments. The photographs taken are recorded with stories and secrets that show the immediacy of new environments and the freedom of new encounters. -Elodie Grethen
