Waiting For The Sibyl by William Kentridge

Walther König

A collection of works by South African artist William Kentridge.

The texts in this book are mainly quotations from the libretto of the chamber opera Waiting for the Sibyl. The opera was produced for the Opera House in Rome and was performed at the same theater for the first time in September 2019. Composed by saxophonist Nhlanhla Mahlangu and pianist Kyle Shepherd. During the performance, images and phrases were projected on screens of various sizes placed inside the Opera House. Some were in sync with the phrase being sung, while others were completely independent. In an actual opera stage, text is usually displayed on the right-hand page, and drawings and shadows of dancers on the stage are projected on the left-hand page. Many different drawings also appear. The production and publication of this book took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has made it impossible to stage operas in theaters. This project is filled with the hope that the day will soon come when we will be able to see this opera again in its complete form.
