(Signed) Distant Lights by Yukihito Kono
Artist book by Japanese photographer Yukihito Kono.
This work is based on several dark images Kono found in his own archive. The photos, which were taken late at night in a park during a visit to Basel, Switzerland, show a failed attempt. Kono searched for stars in the darkness and adjusted the exposure, but all he saw was particles that were indistinguishable from stars and digital noise. On the other hand, in his memories, countless stars were shining, and the lack of meshing between those memories/experiences and the photographs that remained as records gave him an opportunity to reconsider how photographs should be as documents. Photographs reflect things that cannot be captured by the human eye and perception, but at the same time there are many things that are not captured. In such an ambiguous state, we repeatedly interpret and convince ourselves, and form new memories based on the remaining images. After much contemplation, Kono is geographically far from Kanazawa, where he is currently based, and in terms of memory and time, he is getting further and further away day by day. was produced. The design, the choice of paper, and the traces of the hand, which eliminate decoration to the utmost, further emphasize the delicacy and fragility of the image.
