Edited Photographs by Nigel Shafran

Photoworks/Stiedl

Third photobook by British photographer Nigel Shafran.

This book consists of five series of works produced between 1992 and 2004: "Ruthbook," "Dad's Office," "Washing-up 2000," "Charity Shops, car boot sales, market stalls," and "Ruth on the phone," along with essays by British writer/curator David Chandler and another British independent curator/writer, Charlotte Cotton. The book attempts to create a dynamic sequence through the entire book, which is similar to that of "Dark Rooms," published 12 years after this work, but in contrast to the one-way flow of the latter, this book adopts a spiral structure in which the beginning and the end are connected. These two books are unique in the sense that their structure reflects the changes in values that arise from the emotions and life stages of each case, and the artist's feelings are strongly felt beneath the restrained expression.
