Ruthbook by Nigel Shafran
The first book by London-based photographer Nigel Shafran, which was self-published in 1995.
This book is literally a personal work, focusing on portraits of his partner Ruth, taken from June 1992 to January 1995. There are many artists who deal with similar subjects, but He describes himself as “a snapshot photographer with a large format camera”, and Shafran's photographs have a unique aspect that cannot be generally categorized as “snapshots” nor classical portraits. In this book, those photographs of Ruth are arranged in a fragmentary but flowing sequence, and despite the small number of pages, you can feel the definite strength of the work. The hand written letters on book cover emphasizes the personal aspect of the book much more.
