The thaler then changed its name to the dollar and continues to exist at the center of the economy to this day. The region's large deposits of iron, cobalt, barite, nickel and uranium have become important resources in the industrialization of Europe. During World War II, it became a center for uranium mining as part of the Nazi plan to develop nuclear weapons, a process that continued until 1964 under communism.
