Belgian Colonial Monuments by Jan Kempenaers

Roma Publications

A collection of works by Belgian photographer Jan Kempenaers.

This book covers the period from the establishment of the Congo Free State, which was colonized as private land by the second King of Belgium, Leopold II, in 1884, to the independence of the Congo in 1960. Includes photographs of 40 bronze statues related to the past. We experience monuments, their memories and their symbolism differently than they did when they were created. The era of colonialism has had a major impact on today's society, and it is still fresh in our minds that the "Black Lives Matter" movement sparked debates about how bronze statues should be and the movement to remove them in various places.
