(Imperfect) CATHÉDRALES by Laurence Aëgerter
A collection of works by French artist Laurence Aëgerter.
This work was inspired by a catalog of French cathedrals and churches published in 1949 by the French Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Tourism. By placing the book by the window of his studio and letting in natural light, Aegerter recreated what a day would look like on the façade of Saint-Etienne Cathedral in Bruges. Photographed every minute over the course of two hours, this book allows you to experience the changing light of this unique image through 120 photographs. The shadows and lights of the Gothic architecture of the original photograph are superimposed and imperceptibly engulfed in new shadows that slide slowly over the cathedral. These images produced by Aegerter overlap three layers of time: the 12th century, 1949, and 2012.
