Lviv - God's Will by Viacheslav Poliakov
A collection of works by Lviv-based photographer Vyacheslav Polyakov.
Lviv - God's Will comes from the name of the bus line that connects Lviv and Boza Volya, a small village deep in the forest along the border between Ukraine and Poland. Said to be the promised land of wealth and eternal joy, the bus leaves the main gate of the Old Lviv Cemetery and heads west. The Ukrainian word 'Bozha Volya' literally translates to 'God's will', but it also derives from the word 'bozhevillia' which means madness. The sights and structures seen in this book are exactly as they are found in Boza Volya, untouched except for the use of colorful backgrounds to separate the subjects from the outside world. Also, they are not confined to any geographic line and reflect their state of mind. Beneath its strange aesthetics, Lviv - God's Will reveals a hidden record of the socio-political aspects of everyday Ukrainian life.
``After the collapse of the Soviet Union, along with the expansion of globalization, naive visual subcultures became widespread in public spaces throughout Ukraine. Through the intervention, a scene of improvised sculptures appeared, which could be said to be the result of the people's reckless actions, misunderstandings, vandalism, and wild frenzy of natural vegetation. But in the end, no one is to blame for these unexpected events, it's all God's will."—Viacheslav Poliakov
