(Signed edition) Transparencies: Small Camera Works 1971-1979 by Stephen Shore

A collection of works by American photographer Stephen Shore.

This book contains unpublished works shot on Kodachrome film during the production of Shore's masterpiece "Uncommon Places" (1982). While traveling across the United States to shoot Uncommon Places, the artist also carried a 35mm Leica. For a photographer who mainly used large-format cameras, the Leica was a perfect partner because it allowed him to express himself directly according to his instincts. It was this sensibility that drew the teenage artist to photography, and he later took the same approach to large format photography in an attempt to recreate the direct feel of images shot on 35mm film.

Many years later, when he found a photograph taken with a Leica at the time, he was astonished by the strange atmosphere. The difference between the large format and the 35mm aspect ratio was almost the difference between the sounds of the two notes. Photographs taken with the Leica capture the commonplace and unique atmosphere of America at the same time, suggesting a world beyond the frame.
