"The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy" by British novelist Lawrence Stern, published in 1759, is a revolutionary novel that makes full use of plot digressions, duplicity, and graphical design. Widely known as , and is now positioned as the source of literature that pursued the "stream of consciousness" by James Joyce, Marcel Proust, and Virginia Woolf. Sophie Niss has turned her attention to one of the gimmicks known as the Black Pages, famous for the line "Alas, poor Yorick!" Also included is a discussion of the printing technology challenges of the black pages in the first edition by Peter de Voorft, the owner and collector of the library from which the images in the book are based.
