(Tenth Anniversary Edition) Illuminance by Rinko Kawauchi

torch press/Aperture

A collection of works by Japanese photographer Rinko Kawauchi.

Ten years after the simultaneous publication of Utatane, Hanabi, and Hanako, this work takes the world of Utatane to even greater heights. was produced. "Illuminance" in the title means the psychological quantity of brightness that illuminates a flat surface that humans perceive. Kawauchi sees this as the fundamental theme of her photography, and has compiled the photographs she has taken over the past 15 years into a book. At first glance, it looks like a collection of photographs that summarizes photogenic scenes that sparkle in ``casual everyday life. It is the gaze, and the attitude of putting all kinds of phenomena into the square screen without discrimination. The end comes suddenly, but the lives of the living continue. By delicately weaving together disparate motifs, Kawauchi creates a landscape that condenses the beauty and melancholy of this world in one of her photobooks.

This 10th anniversary edition is Hans Gremen, the art director who hosts "fw:books" in the Netherlands, while maintaining the structure of the first edition. Gremmen) redesigned the binding. Re-recorded text by David Chandler, plus new essays by philosopher Masatake Shinohara and Aperture creative director Lesley A. Martin .

"This very finely crafted monograph will make the name of Rinko Kawauchi known to everyone" - Alec Soth (photographer)
